"She was performing for kings and queens internationally," Dr. Sarah Masterson says of 20th century American pianist and composer. "But in the U.S., she had trouble booking gigs outside of churches and auditoriums—African American sororities would host events—that sort of thing."

In this Sonatas & Soundscapes interview that aired Tuesday, May 9th, host Bradley Fuller speaks with SC pianist and Newberry College professor Dr. Sarah Masterson about her research on the life and music of 20th century American composer, concert pianist, journalist, and author Philippa Duke Schuyler. Masterson focuses especially on Schuyler’s extensive piano suite Seven Pillars of Wisdom, of which she made the world premiere recording in 2021.
