“C” is for Chisolm, Julian John (1830-1903). Physician. Born in Charleston Chisholm graduated from the Medical College of the state of South Carolina and continued his studies in London and Paris. In 1858 he became professor of surgery at the Medical College. In 1859 he returned to Europe where he observed the treatment of wounded during the Austro-Italian War. His book, A Manual of Military Surgery, was reprinted many times and used extensively during the Civil War. During the Civil War he served as a medical officer in the Confederate army. After the war, Chisolm resumed his faculty position, becoming dean of the Medical College in 1867. Because professional prospects in post war Charleston were bleak, in 1868 John Julian Chisolm moved to Baltimore where he joined the University of Maryland Medical School and became its dean in 1869.
