It’s common knowledge that the pandemic had a lasting impact on students across the country. While much attention has been given to academic setbacks, another equally important issue is the loss of social and emotional coping skills.
Behavioral issues such as chronic absenteeism, school violence and escalating mental health challenges have risen for students of all ages. Research has consistently demonstrated the benefits of integrating social and emotional learning with traditional academics.
Teaching students how to manage their emotions and collaborate and empathize with others are essential life skills that contribute to a student’s success and well-being, in and out of the classroom.
For the College of Charleston, I’m Dr. Rénard Harris.
