For South Carolina Public Radio, I'm Dr. Rénard Harris from the College of Charleston. This is Teachable Moments, a minute of education for students and parents.
High school is more than a steppingstone to college—it’s a critical time for students to discover who they are and what they care about. But traditional models often miss the mark, focusing more on test scores and rigid curricula. This focus can leave students feeling disconnected from learning and uncertain about their future.
That’s why more schools are teaming up with colleges, labs, and nonprofits to shift learning out of the classroom. Whether it’s interning at a local startup, diving into research, or leading a community project, students are getting their hands dirty—and letting their imaginations run wild. Education should be a journey of self-discovery, not a race to graduation.
