Standards-based grading has faced scrutiny in recent years. Educators question the effectiveness of letter and percentage grades, which have been the standard for over a century.
Concerns about grade inflation and the gap between students’ grades and standardized tests scores have fueled the debate.
A recent survey revealed that educators don’t think standards-based grades provide meaningful feedback.
Despite these concerns, transitioning to an alternative system presents challenges. Educators and policymakers are struggling with how to best assess and communicate student progress in a way that is both accurate and beneficial to learning outcomes.
