Teachable Moments: Health trends schools are watching this year

TRANSCRIPT:

For South Carolina Public Radio, I'm Dr. Rénard Harris from the College of Charleston. This is Teachable Moments, a minute of education for students and parents.

As students return to classrooms, schools are closely monitoring health trends including mental health challenges, declining vaccination rates, and increasing absenteeism. Addressing these issues requires collaboration between schools, families, and community partners.

To support student well-being, many schools are expanding access to mental health resources, including on-site counselors and partnerships with behavioral health providers. Efforts to improve vaccination rates include outreach campaigns and coordination with mobile clinics to offer vaccines on campus. To reduce chronic absenteeism, schools are engaging families early, identifying barriers and offering tailored support.

For the College of Charleston, I’m Dr. Rénard Harris.

Rénard Harris is an Associate Professor of Management in the School of Business at the College of Charleston (2022-present). He teaches courses in Leadership and courses in Managing Diversity. His leadership course focuses on the dynamics of effective leadership, positive influence, and clear vision. His Managing Diversity course focuses on exploring culture, experiences, and identity as asset and resource of those less heard and less seen.
