Recent rains across the state have swollen the banks of many of South Carolina’s streams and rivers. A flood advisory continues until Saturday morning for the Congaree River at Columbia, impacting Richland and Lexington Counties. The Congaree is set to crest Wednesday evening at 14.8’ then water levels are expected to drop below 10 feet by Friday.

At 14 feet, low lying areas of roadways in Columbia will flood along with portions of the Cayce and West Columbia river walk. Thursday, water levels are expected to drop to 10 feet. Flooding could still continue to impact some flood prone locations near and downstream from Columbia through Saturday.

On the Waccamaw River, a flood warning is in effect until further notice. The forecast crest at the Longs river gauge is expected to occur Thursday evening, at 12.6’. Minor flooding begins at 12’ and the forecast calls for levels above that threshold though the weekend.

Flooding is also happening along the Waccamaw near Conway. Water levels are currently at 11.18’; flooding begins at 11.’ Water levels will continue to increase through the rest of the week, reaching a crest of 11.7’ Sunday. Low lying homes on Riverside Drive north of Conway and the Witch Golf Course may begin to flood.
