“S” is for State Farmers Market. The State Farmers Market is a three-site system of state-sponsored facilities operated by the South Carolina State Department of Agriculture. Markets are located in Columbia, Greenville and the Pee Dee and provide leased spaces to wholesale and retail vendors. Until 1951, the Columbia Farmers Market was located on Assembly Street and then moved to a fifty-one acre site on Bluff Road. In 2010, it was relocated to site on the Charleston Highway in Lexington County. Until 1979 the Greenville Market was under the direction of Greenville County when the State Department of Agriculture assumed ownership. In 1983 the Pee Dee Market moved from downtown Florence to a site on U.S. Highway 52 between Florence and Darlington. All three State Farmers Markets offer South Carolina fruits, vegetables, nuts, and other commodities.
