Tornado Watch Issued for Parts of the Midlands

A Tornado Watch has been issued for eastern parts of the Midlands, including the city of Greenwood, through 8:00PM EDT Friday.

Strong to severe thunderstorms were moving through portions of eastern Georgia Friday afternoon and continue to approach South Carolina. Several Tornado Warnings have been issued since the late afternoon Friday in Georgia and the threat is anticipated to cross over into the Palmetto State Friday evening and into the overnight.

The following counties are in the tornado watch area: Aiken, McCormick, Edgefield, Saluda, and Greenwood. This watch area could be expanded over the next several hours to include more counties.

Additionally, strong storms will have the capability of producing heavy rainfall and damaging wind gusts. The threat of widespread heavy rainfall is expected to continue through Saturday as a near-stationary cold front drapes itself over the Palmetto State delivering rounds of showers and isolated thunderstorms to the region. A Flash Flood Watch is in effect from Saturday evening through late Saturday night for most of the Midlands and western portions of Pee Dee and the LowCountry.
