South Carolina's coast is home to a variety of shark species, especially during the warm summer months. While sharks often make headlines, they play an important role in maintaining healthy marine ecosystems.
Most sharks are not interested in people, and encounters remain extremely rare. Swimmers can reduce risk by staying near lifeguards, avoiding swimming at dawn or dusk, and staying away from schools of baitfish.
Sharks have been part of our coastal waters for millions of years, and learning to coexist with them helps us better appreciate the incredible diversity of life in our ocean.
