S C Big Melon Contest

Making It Grow Radio Minute
SC Public Radio

Congratulations are in order for my dear friend, Sidi Limehouse, of Rosebank Farms on Johns Island, for his very large watermelon. It won the S C Big Melon Contest at the recent watermelon field day at Clemson’s Edisto Research and Education Center. Zach Snipes, a Clemson agent well-known to watcher of Making It Grow, came up with the idea of having a friendly competition among growers for the first time ever this year.

Watermelons are a big part of our state’s agricultural economy with melons grown on 4 thousand acres and bringing in eighteen million dollars. If you want to try a new way to serve watermelon, just search Ham Rolls with the South Carolina, watermelon queen, Making It Grow. The reigning queen, Samantha Nichols, came to our studio and we made these amazingly tasty hors d’oeuvres together. Delish!!
