Congratulations are in order for my dear friend, Sidi Limehouse, of Rosebank Farms on Johns Island, for his very large watermelon. It won the S C Big Melon Contest at the recent watermelon field day at Clemson’s Edisto Research and Education Center. Zach Snipes, a Clemson agent well-known to watcher of Making It Grow, came up with the idea of having a friendly competition among growers for the first time ever this year.
Watermelons are a big part of our state’s agricultural economy with melons grown on 4 thousand acres and bringing in eighteen million dollars. The reigning queen, Samantha Nichols, came to our studio and we made these amazingly tasty hors d’oeuvres together. Delish!!
