Hi, I'm Mark Rapp, and this is Rapp on Jazz.

Jazz singer and pianist Sarah Vaughan affectionately nicknamed “Sassy” and the “Divine One,” was an extraordinary talent who blended technical brilliance with heartfelt emotion.

Her stardom was launched at the Apollo Theater Amateur Night contest, where she sang "Body and Soul" and won. Her stunning, operatic voice and remarkable versatility throughout her career allowed her to thrive in styles from bebop to classic ballads. Renowned for memorable tunes like "Misty" and "Lullaby of Birdland," she effortlessly tackled intricate melodies.

Sarah's legacy is celebrated with two Grammy Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 1989, she received the prestigious NEA Jazz Masters Award.

Her impact on vocal jazz continues to inspire and uplift music lovers everywhere!
