TRANSCRIPT:

I’m Mark Rapp, and this is Rapp on Jazz.

Charleston’s own Quentin E. Baxter is an award-winning producer, performer, and passionate jazz educator. Born into a family of drummers, with his mother leading the way, Baxter says he “can’t recall a moment in youth without drums at home or church.” His musical journey has earned him four GRAMMY nominations, the 2017 SC Governor’s Award for the Arts, and his own day in Charleston—April 25.

Baxter tours globally with RANKY TANKY and René Marie, lighting up stages from Jazz at Lincoln Center to South Africa’s Joy of Jazz Festival. Back home, he serves on arts boards and has taught at the College of Charleston for over 20 years.

This has been Rapp on Jazz, a co-production of ColaJazz and SC Public Radio, made possible by The ETV Endowment of South Carolina.
