I’m Mark Rapp, and this is Rapp on Jazz.

South Carolina has produced some exceptional jazz talent—artists who have shaped the past and continue to define the future.

Let’s start with Dizzy Gillespie, born in Cheraw, South Carolina. One of the greatest trumpet players of all time, Dizzy co-created bebop and helped bring Latin rhythms into jazz. His style was fast, fiery, and foundational.

Fast forward to today, and South Carolina continues to swing. Saxophonist Chris Potter, from Columbia, is one of the most respected and in-demand players on the global scene, known for his technical mastery and bold improvisation.

In Columbia, we are working to build jazz culture through performance and education.

From clubs in Charleston to classrooms in Greenville, SC, artists are writing the next great chapter in jazz.

This has been Rapp on Jazz, a co-production of ColaJazz and SC Public Radio, made possible by The ETV Endowment of South Carolina.
