Rapp on Jazz: 'Piano Jazz'

TRANSCRIPTS:

I’m Mark Rapp, and this is Rapp on Jazz.

Few radio shows in jazz history have done more for the music than "Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz."

Debuting in 1979 on NPR, this radio series, produced by South Carolina Public Radio, was intimate, insightful, and entirely unique— two pianos, two chairs, and great conversation.

Marian welcomed legends like Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, and Herbie Hancock—not just to perform, but also to discuss their influences, challenges, and creative processes.

She also featured rising stars, giving artists like Norah Jones and Diana Krall a national platform early in their careers.

Each episode was part concert, part masterclass—always warm, always authentic.

"Piano Jazz" wasn’t just about music—it was about connection. Marian listened with the same artistry she played.

This has been Rapp on Jazz, a co-production of ColaJazz and SC Public Radio, made possible by The ETV Endowment of South Carolina.
