Rapp on Jazz: Dr. Matt White

TRANSCRIPT:

Hi, I’m Mark Rapp, and this is Rapp on Jazz.

One of the standout names in jazz arranging in South Carolina is Dr. Matt White.

As Director of Jazz Studies at the University of South Carolina, Dr. White is an accomplished trumpeter and educator as well as a gifted arranger and composer whose work bridges tradition and innovation.

His arrangements for big band and small ensemble are intricate and accessible. He often draws on Southern themes and rhythmic textures rooted in the Carolinas. He’s known for reshaping standards with bold voicings and writing original compositions that sound like instant classics.

Jazz ensembles across the country have performed Dr. White’s music, and his leadership of USC’s Left Bank Big Band continues to inspire a new generation of jazz arrangers.

This has been Rapp on Jazz, a co-production of ColaJazz and South Carolina Public Radio, made possible by the ETV Endowment of South Carolina.
