Rapp on Jazz: Louis Armstrong's goodwill trips during the Cold War

TRANSCRIPT:

I’m Mark Rapp, and this is Rapp On Jazz.

Louis Armstrong was a global ambassador for music and goodwill. During the Cold War, he toured the world under the auspices of the U.S. State Department, performing in Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

Armstrong’s charm and virtuosity forged an immediate connection. His trumpet, his unmistakable voice, and his infectious personality opened doors that politics often could not. He inspired audiences, influenced local musicians, and reminded people everywhere of music’s joy and humanity.
The tours also enriched Armstrong himself, exposing him to new cultures and rhythms that subtly informed his playing. Armstrong demonstrated that jazz sparks understanding and celebrates the universal power of music.
