For South Carolina Public Radio, I'm Dr. Rénard Harris from the College of Charleston. This is Teachable Moments, a minute of education for students and parents.
As we observe National Dyslexia Awareness Month this October, it’s important to recognize the challenges students and families face. Dyslexia is academically challenging for children, and emotionally and mentally challenging for families.
Stress results from fears of their child’s future, the ongoing need to advocate and communicate about the diagnosis, as well as manage the financial burden.
My colleague, Jenna Abetz, professor of communication, conducted a study to highlight the value of support groups for parents. She found that these groups provide a space for mothers to share experiences, concerns and strategies for managing the challenges. By connecting with others in similar situations, parents can find comfort, advice and a sense of community.
