Teachable Moments: National Safety Month

TRANSCRIPT:

For South Carolina Public Radio, I’m Dr. Rénard Harris from the College of Charleston. This is Teachable Moments, a minute of education for students and parents.

Many parents have mixed feelings when their child becomes a licensed driver. There’s the relief of spending less time behind the wheel, shuttling kids to school and practices, but there’s also the very real worry about safety. Car crashes remain the number one cause of preventable death for teens, and since June is National Safety Month, it’s a good time to revisit a few basics.

One in five crashes involves driver distraction. Eating, texting, talking with friends, or reaching for something in the car can pull a teen’s attention off the road. Parents can empower teens to stay safe by reinforcing simple habits: check blind spots, buckle up, don’t speed and keep your eyes on the road ahead. Simple habits that build safe drivers.

For the College of Charleston, I’m Dr. Rénard Harris.

Rénard Harris is an Associate Professor of Management in the School of Business at the College of Charleston (2022-present). He teaches courses in Leadership and courses in Managing Diversity.
