Leaving for college is a big transition. For many students, it’s the first time living away from home, managing a schedule, and making new friends.
Research shows that a strong sense of belonging can improve academic success, and emotional well-being. That’s why many colleges have programs to help students feel connected.
At the College of Charleston, Weeks of Welcome introduces students to resources and organizations to build community. Activities like dog therapy, fitness classes and popsicle parties help students make connections.
For new students, the challenge is showing up. Attending an event alone can be uncomfortable, but friendships often begin with a simple conversation. College can feel overwhelming, but sometimes all it takes to connect with others is showing up.
