For South Carolina Public Radio, I’m Dr. Rénard Harris from the College of Charleston. This is Teachable Moments, a minute of education for students and parents.
AI is changing the way students learn, but perhaps the most important question isn't whether students use AI. It's how they use it. AI can be a helpful assistant. But it shouldn't do the thinking for us.
Think about writing a paper. One student asks AI to generate the entire assignment. Another uses AI to brainstorm ideas, improve organization and strengthen an argument. Both used the same tool, but only one remained engaged in the learning process. The goal is to use technology as a tool that helps us think more deeply. After all, the best assistant is one that helps us do our best work, not one that does the work for us.
