For South Carolina Public Radio, I'm Dr. Rénard Harris from the College of Charleston. This is Teachable Moments, a minute of education for students and parents.
Despite the critical role of school nurses in student health and well-being, only 65% of public schools nationwide have a full-time nurse. South Carolina has one of the highest projected nursing shortages in the country. Reasons include high stress, burnout and low pay.
School nurses manage vaccinations, create health plans, and care for the 40% of children with chronic conditions. For many students, a school nurse may be their only access to healthcare.
My colleague, Kasey Jordan, professor of Health Services Administration & Management, says if we’re serious about improving health and academic readiness for our youth, we need to invest more in qualified school nurses. Their value cannot be overstated.
