For South Carolina Public Radio, I’m Dr. Rénard Harris from the College of Charleston. This is Teachable Moments, a minute of education for students and parents.
Sibling relationships are complicated. For many, it’s the only relationship that lasts from childhood to adulthood. Siblings are our first friends and rivals. Over time, they become mirrors, reminding us who we were and who we’ve become.
Siblings are going to clash, what matters is balancing clashes with positive interactions. When conflicts do arise, parents should resist the urge to act as referee. As long as no one is getting hurt, it’s often best to let siblings work out their disagreements on their own.
Sibling relationships last a lifetime. With guidance, they can become a source of strength rather than strain.
