South Carolina is at risk of experiencing severe weather on Wednesday. The most significant risk is mainly focused across the state's eastern half, where there could be a few tornadoes and damaging wind gusts of at least 60 mph.

An extensive low-pressure system will move over the northeast from here, bringing severe risk. A cold front extends from this system, creating unsettled and severe weather across the Plains since Sunday, Monday across the Ozarks, and Tuesday across the Deep South.

This low-pressure system has a very large wind field. You can expect the winds to be strong over 1,200 miles from Minneapolis to Myrtle Beach and from the Northeast through Florida. Remember that wind gusts could exceed 40 mph across South Carolina, especially after the cold front's passage, pulling dry and cooler air across our area. This strong dry air will also enhance the fire weather conditions across our state on Thursday and Friday. Make sure you secure any loose objects in your patios or balconies. It is very important to remember that strong winds can quickly propagate fires. Therefore, avoid anything that sparks or could ignite a fire.

Timing of severe weather

Some isolated severe storms are possible across Upstate starting Tuesday night, with some storms developing strong gusts of at least 48 mph. The area will experience strong winds before and after the cold front passes.

Strong to severe storms will push across the Midland in the morning. Plan carefully if you are heading out between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. As the storms move east, we can expect them to be along the coast, extending from the Pee Dee through the Lowcountry, between 10 a.m. and noon. The chance for severe weather will diminish in the afternoon. But keep in mind the winds will increase, and the fire risk will also increase. The severe thunderstorms can bring damaging wind costs of at least 75 mph, and a few tornadoes will be possible. The highest risk will be mainly across the eastern portion of the Midlands through Pee Dee, including a big chunk of the Lowcountry.
