Tropical Depression Two forms, not a threat to SC; forecast

On Saturday afternoon, the National Hurricane Center officially designated Invest 91L as Tropical Depression Two. Although conditions are not entirely favorable for this storm to intensify into a hurricane, it is possible that by Sunday afternoon, we could be talking about Tropical Storm Barry as it moves over the Bay of Campeche. Wind shear will remain in place, limiting its intensification. There is plenty of warm water over the Gulf, which serves as fuel for this system to continue to gain better structure on Sunday.

Tropical Depression Two NHC track issued on Saturday evening

This system is moving slowly west-northwest and is expected to make landfall in Mexico by Monday afternoon, specifically over the state of Tamaulipas. It is expected to bring torrential rains to northeastern Mexico, but rain bands will also impact the Texas Coast starting on Sunday.

South Carolina's unsettled weather continues.

The tropical depression will not impact South Carolina, but unsettled conditions are expected to persist throughout the weekend and into early next week. A high-pressure system is in place east of the state, which will keep winds mainly from the southwest. However, a trough will cause instability, increasing the chance of storms, primarily in the afternoon. Expect the heat and instability to produce afternoon storms across the Midlands, the Pee Dee, and the Lowcountry on Sunday. On Monday and Tuesday, with the trough and an approaching cold front from the west, there will likely be more scattered thunderstorms across the Upstate and Midlands regions. Temperatures will remain above normal statewide in the low to mid-90s for the beginning of the week.
