Temperatures soar & it will be muggy before the next cold front

The hot stretch continues across South Carolina, with temperatures remaining 10 to 15° above normal this time of year through Monday. We expect the next cold front to push through on Monday night. This one will bring much-needed relief from all this heat, and temperatures will drop to 5 to 15° below normal for this time of the year toward the middle of next week.

Mostly dry air in the middle levels of the atmosphere will limit shower activity, but deeper moisture arrives with the next cold front next week.

To end the week and through the weekend, we’re not only talking about temperatures that will be hot, but with the wind coming in from the south-southeast, expect lots of humidity to be injected into the region. Monday will continue to be hot, especially across the Midlands and the coast. We expect the winds to be mainly from the south-southwest, which will continue to bring plenty of moisture and warmth across the area. Highs across the Palmetto State will be between the mid-80s and low-90s. The evenings will be especially warm and muggy. Lows throughout the weekend will be in the 60s, and the warmest evening will be Sunday to Monday just before the cold front pushes through. Lows along the coast will stay closer to 70° while the Midlands and upstate will be between the low to mid-60s. This kind of heat is abnormal for this time of the year. Make sure you take frequent breaks if you’re working outdoors and stay hydrated.

Where is the rain?

With the south-southwesterly flow and all the moisture available, we will have a few scattered showers passing through the region Friday night. By Sunday afternoon, the showers line will slowly move west to east. There’s a chance to have some storms on Sunday night across upstate. Please stay informed because some storms could become severe as the front pushes through the state. There’s also a chance for severe thunderstorms across the Midlands on Monday morning as the line pushes eastward. Expect the coast to be dominated by rain showers and isolated storms on Monday night.

After the cold front next week

Temperatures will quickly plummet by Tuesday afternoon, and we will feel cooler temperatures and drier air. Tuesday afternoon will feel comfortable, with high temperatures around the upper 40s across upstate, low 50s across the Midlands, and around the mid-50s along the coast. Clouds will likely clear by the evening across the western half of South Carolina, allowing the temperatures to drop to the low 40s. While the coast will remain with temperatures around the mid-50s, this will likely mean that the clouds will stay put for the low country and the Pee Dee.

We will continue to bring you updates throughout the weekend.
